“Over the span of two years, it has truly been a blessing to be a part of the mixed martial arts/kickboxing class led by Phil Knowles. Not only do I get a thrill from working out physically by hitting some pads and learning MMA technique, but I also get a thrill from working out spiritually from the time that we spend in prayer and devotion. I’ve enjoyed connecting with the guys and building special relationships with them that give us the opportunity to share our lives with each other.”
My wife and I first met Phil and his wife Malu at Grace church during the 11a.m. service. After the church service, we talked some more about similar interests, and then Phil invited me to the Monday night kickboxing class. This invitation came at a very low point in my life as I was just shy of 3 months sober, and still battling my addiction against alcohol. I needed positive, sober people in my life, and I found just that. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed and accepted.
I came into the class with no prior experience, but was able to catch on quickly through the instruction and demonstration. Everyone there was more than happy to help me learn the different kickboxing moves, and still have a good time. Some of the people in class have different martial arts backgrounds, such as Karate and MMA, so its cool to see the different techniques.
There’s so much I’ve learned in this class. Here’s a few examples: self-defense moves such as disarming a gun or getting free from someone choking you, several different punches and kicks, sparring drills, pad holding, and I can’t forget about THE GRANADA. At the end of the class, we have a 15 minute devotional from the Bible. We then discuss what was read, and then pray for any needs or praises.
I was able to build really strong friendships with everyone in the class. We sometimes get together for B-days, BBQs, and other events. These outings are great for me cause I need that positive fellowship outside the walls of Grace, as well as within.
Phil has been there for me outside of the class also. There’s been a couple times when I needed someone to talk to, and he was there for me. We would talk things through and then pray about it. His heart for the Lord is inspiring for me, and makes me want to seek Him more.
The Monday night kickboxing class has given me confidence, Godly friendships, and the ability to protect myself, my family, or someone who may be in trouble and can’t defend themselves. It has been so much more than just a martial arts class. It has helped me build positive friendships and also aided in my recovery of addiction. I’ve drawn closer to the Lord by stepping outside of my box, and I’m glad I did.
