Proverbs 29:23 – A man’s pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.
Proverbs 15:33 – The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor.
Proverbs 1:7 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Pride is the root of sin in our lives. Pride basically says I can do anything on my own, and I do not need anyone else or God. We may not think this, but ultimately, this is what becomes communicated. When we are proud and arrogant, it destroys the relationships we have with others, but also hinders our fellowship with Jesus Christ, and drawing closer to Him.
Have you ever finished a marathon, earned a black belt, or finished college with a degree? These things are very good, but accomplishments can bring on pride. Every human being since Adam and Eve have fallen into deception and sin of pride, but we do not have to stay there. Jesus sacrifice on the cross even paid for that sin! When we humble ourselves to our Savior, we realize we need Him to do anything and everything that we do on earth.
Understand that with pride out of our lives does not earn our way to heaven. Nothing we can do of ourselves can get us to heaven. It was and is Jesus that has bridged the gap between our separation from our Heavenly Father, who created us. It is a free gift, that He sent His one and only Son to die for us, because of His infinite love for us.
Ephesians 2:8-9 – For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.
Instead of Pride, Love
1 Corinthians 13:4 – Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
Finally, being proud is not love. Pride is self-centered and damaging to others in your life. Pride motivates us to push others out so you can get on top, even at any cost. At the end of it all, pride will ultimately make you alone in this world. But when we do have pride moments, God’s grace is sufficient if we turn back to Him.
