Exercising Your Spiritual Muscles

Hebrews 5:11-14 – There is so much more we would like to say about this.  But you don’t seem to listen, so it’s hard to make you understand.  You have been Christians a long time now, and you ought to be teaching others.  Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things a beginner must learn about the Scriptures.  You are like babies who drink only milk and cannot eat solid food.  And a person who is living on milk isn’t very far along in the Christian life and doesn’t know much about doing what is right.  Solid food is for those who are mature, who have trained themselves to recognize the difference between right and wrong and then do what is right.
Martial artists who have achieved their black belt have put in the time to their training and development in their art.  They no longer are at white belt level, and what they know becomes second nature to them.
In our spiritual growth as Christians, we need to apply the same type of dedication in our training for spiritual maturity.  Hebrews 5:11-14 is speaking to those who have not grown in their spiritual journey and are acting as they were in the beginning of their faith in Christ.  Many of us can manifest childish behaviors instead of growing into spiritual adulthood.
Spiritual maturity and growth only happen through application and acting on what is true.  Progress will take time, but growth taking place is very important.  Continue to do right things according to God’s Word and you will grow closer to Christ.
Just like a fighter trains rigorously and grows in his art, as Christians, we should apply the same vigilance in training towards our journey with Christ.  Otherwise, we will be no better off than we were as a new Christian and we will not have an impact on changing the world for Christ.
