The Lord’s Prayer: Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done

Religious

Matthew 6:10 “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
After the line of address, the first thing the Lord does in the model prayer is make a request. Strikingly, Jesus does begin with a request for His needs to be met, His ministry be advanced, or His ailments be righted. Instead, He prays that God advance the kingdom of heaven and do His will. Why would we need to pray that God do His will?
We could almost understand asking God to do our will. But why does He need to be asked to do His?
Perhaps there are two reasons. First, to remind us of our purpose. We are not here to advance our own kingdoms, create a comfortable life for us, or amass a pile of wealth. We are called to serve our Father’s kingdom, to do His will on this earth. When we pray for His kingdom to come, and His will to be done, we force ourselves to remember our purpose and to look past our immediate problems.
The second is that He wants us to participate in bringing His kingdom to earth. He could do it Himself, but He wants to include it, because He loves us. One of the ways He has commanded us to do this is by praying. When we pray, we are following orders and helping advance the kingdom that will one day rule the earth.
