Against All Odds

Against All Odds

1 Samuel 17:49 – Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it from his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead.  The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face downward to the ground.
In the summer of 1998, it was my second year in the military, and I was at the end of my two week annual training.  My squad and I were in the NCO club watching a Marine go undefeated arm wrestling anyone who challenged him no matter the size.  He was more muscular and in better shape than anyone in the club including myself.
I was extremely thin and physically inferior to this Marine.  As it was my turn to challenge the Marine to an arm wrestling match, I was laughed at by the spectators.  All of a sudden, adrenaline kicked in and I sensed the Lord’s presence like I have never felt before.  After ten minutes in the match, I was able to defeat Goliath.
The point of this story is not about me, but it is to illustrate that all of us will face our Goliath in our lives. The odds may seem overwhelming and outright impossible.  You may have experienced them already in your life.  However, God is much bigger and devastatingly more powerful than the insurmountable giants we will face.
David knew who to turn to when he faced off with Goliath.  He knew that his strength was not in his human abilities, but in his Lord and Savior.  The same powerful God that worked through David and saved Israel is the same God that can give us the strength to take the giants out in our time as well.
