Righteous Anger

Righteous Anger

In most Christian circles, we have been taught that Jesus was passive.  Turning the other cheek is a common reference used in favor of being passive.  Jesus was not passive.  Everything He did for us was exactly the opposite.  For example, look at John 2:13-17:
When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.  In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money.  So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.  To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here!  How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!  His disciples remembered that it is written; “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
Jesus showed a righteous anger when He witnessed abuse in desecrating God’s house of worship.  If Jesus was passive, He would have either gone up to the money changers and politely asked them to stop what they were doing, or walked away all together.  This would have enabled sinners to continue in their ways.  Also, non-believers in their time would have turned away from Jesus, allowing Hell to consume more souls.  Sometimes, sin needs a kick in the teeth, so that God’s Word will not be ignored.
