The Power of Respect

The Power of Respect

1 Peter 2:17 – Show respect for everyone.  Love your Christian brothers and sisters.  Fear God.  Show respect for the king.
In basic training, Drill Sergeants have a reputation of torturing new recruits and enjoying it way too much.  They did not do this to torture, but to transform you into a fighting force.  Some might have enjoyed it more than others, but needless to say, it is part of what you sign up for.
Drill Sergeants, however, are some of the best leaders you will ever have a chance to meet.  To this day, I will never forget Drill Sergeant Sublett.  This leader exemplified leadership.  While we had to get up at 0400 hours, I caught him walking into our barracks at 0300 hours.  This means he was up much earlier than that.  He did this to get ready for training.  In a way, we had the privilege of sleeping in.  This is just a sliver of the sacrifice he made for this platoon.
Drill Sergeant Sublett definitely earned our respect by how he trained and taught us.  But respect should not be given just to those who have earned it.  Respect should be given freely to any and everyone as it says in 1 Peter 2:17.  When we respect others freely, we are dying to our sinful compulsions, and ultimately undermines the power of Satan over our lives as well as those we show respect.  Most importantly, it shows respect for God and obedience to Him.
