The Ways of the Wise

The Ways of the Wise

Hosea 14:9 – Let those who are wise understand these things.  Let those who are discerning listen carefully.  The paths of the Lord are true and right, and righteous people live by walking in them.  But sinners stumble and fall along the way.
As a learning opportunity, a coach sends an arrogant student who has been training with him for two months into the ring with a seasoned fighter.  The student knows the techniques needed, but he has no idea what he is doing once he is in the fight.  It does not take long to see him down on the mat time and time again.
It is one thing to know how to do a proper round kick.  It is another thing having to execute that kick in a sparring match.  Having knowledge is important, but without the wisdom to apply what you have learned, the knowledge becomes useless to you.
Wisdom is the ability to foresee potential outcomes before they happen.  It is usually acquired through learning and experience.  Without wisdom, we live in the short term and our future is bleak.  We wind up doing things we regret, or we could get hurt in the process.
We live in a sinful world and we as sinners, we naturally gravitate towards doing things with a short sighted perspective.  Christ is our source of wisdom.  He is the way, the truth, and the life.  When we abide in Him, we are able to see with His eyes what lies before us, life and death, blessing and cursing. And with this wisdom, we can look ahead knowing our future is secure, and we can avoid the pitfalls of sin in ways we would not perceive without our Lord.
