Prisoners of War

Colossians 1:13 – For He has rescued us from the one who rules in the Kingdom of darkness, and He has brought us up into the kingdom of His dear Son.

In war, it is not uncommon for soldiers who have been captured are sent to enemy prison camps.  Some may survive the hardships the prison make, while other P.O.W.s may not.  It is a tragedy to see our loved ones taken captive and to hear to stories of how they had suffered.

When Adam sinned against God, we became slaves to sin and captive in Satan’s prison.  Because of the snare of sin, we would have no hope of eternal life or a relationship with God.  Nothing we could do on our own would ever get us out of the prison of darkness.

But God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to rescue us from Satan’s prison.  He sent Christ right into enemy territory where no man has ventured before.  Jesus gave His own very life for us and holds the keys of death and Hades (Revelation 1:18).  And because of His sacrifice, we as Christians are free from sins death grip and no longer prisoners of darkness.  We have been rescued and share the inheritance that belongs to God’s holy people (v12).  We fight in God’s army now.
